To Be Made Much Of: a Reflection on Psalm 78:40-72, Isaiah 52:1-12, Galatians 4:12-20, and Mark 8:1-
The reported transgender transition Bruce Jenner is undergoing, not confirmed by Jenner, is making much of Jenner and the transgender lifestyle. Tiger Woods’ comeback to golf is being made much of. For anything or anyone to be made much of is a big deal and significant.
Paul makes the case that it is appropriate to be made much of for a good purpose at all times. And this thought is stated in the context of humbling becoming like the other person for their greater good.
We must balance being made much of with how our behavior can provoke God to anger. When the virtues of truth, honesty, and humility are lost in our “being made much over,” a God focus is replaced with a self-focus. That’s not good.
Let us remember that God goes before us, is beside us, and is our rear guard. As followers of Jesus, let us make much of the mission that God has invited us to participate in.
The inclusive and hospitable call of and claim by God is amazing. Let’s make much of that and in turn so live that call and claim that others can be made much of as they are embraced by and embrace God. At least to me that is a good purpose at all times.
